The award is named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator
Randolph J. Caldecott, and was originally created as sort of the flip side of
the Newbery Medal. While the Newbery is awarded to the "most distinguished
American children's book" of the previous year, the Caldecott is awarded
specifically to illustrators.
